About Me

My name is Shawn Becker, and I've been working for the Wood County Sheriff's Department for over 20 years. I was most recently promoted to Patrol Captain, where I continued my responsibilities supervising the Patrol Division along with the Special Response Team.

I have spent my entire law enforcement career working to become the type of leader Wood County deserves. I look forward to meeting you as I start my campaign.

Throughout my career at the Sheriff's Department, I've held a number of positions including:  -Patrol Sergeant -Investigator Sergeant -Patrol Lieutenant -Field Training Officer -Neighborhood Watch Coordinator -Defense and Arrest Tactics Instructor -Adjunct Instructor at Mid-State Technical College -Traffic Crash Reconstructionist

I was a proud member of the Special Response Team holding the positions of Crisis Negotiator, Entry Team Member, Assistant Team Leader, and Team Commander.

Additionally, I served as the Wood County Deputy Sheriff's Association's Vice President assisting in negotiating labor agreements with Wood County.

I was fortunate to be raised in Central Wisconsin by parents Jim and Sandy Becker, along with my brother Scott. Their nearly 30 year marriage set an example of family I sought in life. I credit my parents for providing a foundation of hard work, high standards, a servant attitude, and a focus on family that has helped me grow and thrive.

I met my wife over 32 years ago, Julie Erbes, as a 16 year old high school student. We together attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) and were then married in June, 1991. Julie works with her parents, Mark and Marilee, and her brothers, Rob and Mark, at Erbes Construction/Realty, a family owned business. Julie has been my confidant, my support system and my team mate along the way. She continues to be a source of inspiration for me.

In September 1992 our daughter Jordan was born. It was at this time that Julie and I decided I would pursue a career in law enforcement and although we wanted to raise our family in Central Wisconsin, the opportunity to work with the Sauk Prairie Police Department took us from the area. Our family grew once more in June of 1996 when our daughter Katelyn was born. We moved to Grand Rapids in 1997 when I accepted a position with the Wood County Sheriff’s Department.

Our daughters were raised in a close knit neighborhood attending school in Wisconsin Rapids and were involved in many school and community service activities. Jordan and Katelyn are graduates of Lincoln High School and each have provided me with new and exciting experiences and memories of a lifetime as a proud father.

Jordan ran cross country, track, participated in the Miss Wisconsin Rapids Pageant and has been a long-time member of the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua Skier Water Ski Show Team –an experience she and I have shared for the past five years. She followed in the footsteps of her mother and I and attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point graduating in 2015 majoring in Communication and Public Relations. Jordan has been employed for over a year as the Director of Special Events for Special Olympics.

Katelyn played high school soccer along with Rapids Kickers Competitive Youth Soccer. She even played and lettered in high school football. As a football enthusiast myself, I very much enjoyed watching my daughter on the football field! Katelyn is currently a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Social Work, along with certificates in Criminal Justice and Gerontology. She graduates this coming May.

Our family enjoys being on the Wisconsin River, snowmobiling, time with extended family and being active in our community.

We all look forward to seeing you out and about on the campaign trail!

Community Involvement

I enjoy being part of the vibrant Wisconsin Rapids community and working with those throughout Wood County to positively impact our communities. I look forward to expanding my involvement and meeting new people and groups of people doing great work in Wood County!
